If Restless Legs Is a Leg Problem, Why Do Amputees Still Get It?
Doctors have documented people who lost a leg and still feel it crawling at night. So why is everyone still treating your legs?

"I feel like it instantly stops restless leg syndrome the second I lay down."
You finally get into bed. Lights off...
Then that creepy-crawly feeling starts deep in your calves...
You stretch them. Rub them. Get up and walk the hallway at 2am.
The second you lie back down, it starts again.
Frazer Clacherty, founder of Down To Ground and a former pro cyclist from England, went viral recently for creating a mattress cover that connects his customers to the earth from the comfort of their beds.
People reported better sleep, lower pain and reduced inflammation overall.
But he kept getting asked about restless legs.
In fact… it comes up in his community constantly.
So he went and read the research properly. Not the supplement ads. The real studies.
What he found explains why nothing you put on your legs ever lasts.
And why some of his customers are finally lying still long enough to fall asleep.
Take Jackie for example...
Jackie's Legs Woke Her Every Night for Years. Now They Don't.
Jackie spent 40 years working in Britain's health service. Her legs kept her up most nights.
"You just want to keep moving them to get some relief. But you don't get the relief."
A week after she started sleeping grounded, her watch showed deeper sleep. Then the twitching stopped.
"To go to sleep and not be woken up by my legs twitching... that is a revelation."
But Jackie isn't alone...
Karen's Legs Drove Her "Absolutely Batty." Then She Noticed Something.
Karen lives in Australia. Most nights, the second she tried to sleep, her legs started up.
"They drive you absolutely batty when you're trying to sleep."
Then one day it hit her.
"I thought, oh, I haven't got that happening all the time now. It's such a blessing."
The Scientist Who Tested It With a Multimeter
June has a science background, so she tested it with a multimeter. Standing next to her bed: 2.5. Lying on the cover: 0.5.
Her restless legs? "Almost 98% gone."
As you're about to see, that's exactly what the research predicts.
So what did Frazer find?
Doctors Removed the Leg. The Restless Legs Stayed.
There are documented medical cases of people who lost a leg and still get restless legs in the leg that's gone.
In one, published in 2013, a patient's restless legs were in their left leg. Doctors amputated that leg. The symptoms carried on in the leg that was no longer there.
Another man had lost his leg 22 years earlier. Every night he'd get the unbearable urge to move both legs. His real one, and the one that didn't exist.
"Think about what that proves," Frazer says.
"If your legs were making the feeling, no leg would mean no feeling. But the urge stays.
Because it was never coming from the leg.
It's coming from your BRAIN."
A Brain Drug Calmed a Leg That Didn't Exist
In the documented cases, what calmed the missing leg wasn't a muscle rub or a massage. It was a dopamine drug, the same family used for Parkinson's.
When two neurologists reviewed every published case in 2019, their conclusion was this.
Your brain keeps a map of your body, and that map can fire the feeling all by itself.
The leg is gone. The map isn't.
Which raises the obvious question...
What makes a brain do that?
Your Blood Test Says Your Iron Is Fine. Your Brain Disagrees.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins measured iron in the fluid around the brain and spine of people with restless legs. Their stored iron was about a third of normal.
Their blood iron? No different from healthy people.
Brain scans showed less iron in the brain's dopamine center. And those dopamine cells need iron to do their job.
So here's Frazer's first tip, before anything else: ask your doctor for a ferritin test. Doctors now treat restless legs with iron when it's low, and most sufferers have never been told to ask.
Why Your Legs Are Fine at 10am and Unbearable at 10pm
Dopamine runs on a 24-hour clock. It naturally dips in the evening.
When Johns Hopkins researchers compared samples taken at 10am and 10pm, the swing was far bigger in people with restless legs.
If your dopamine system is already running low, that evening dip is when it drops below the line.
That's why it starts on the couch at 9pm, and why a long flight feels like a trap.
Night Alarm Syndrome: Why Your Body Fights All Night While You Think You're Asleep
In 2007, Dr. Marie-Hélène Pennestri's team in Montreal hooked people with restless legs up to monitors in a sleep lab and measured their blood pressure with every heartbeat.
Most people with restless legs have small involuntary leg kicks all night, every 20 to 40 seconds.
Every kick spiked their blood pressure by an average of 22 points.
Spike, settle, spike, settle. Hundreds of times a night.
Measured, not reported.
So while you think you're asleep, your nervous system is on high alert all night.
In 2013, Johns Hopkins researchers scanned the part of the brain that switches you between awake and asleep. In people with restless legs, it was running high on glutamate, an "alertness" chemical. The higher it was, the more time they spent awake.
"We may have been looking at the wrong thing all along," the lead researcher said.
It's called Night Alarm Syndrome. The urge in your legs is the alarm going off. The kicks are the alarm firing all night.
You can't change your dopamine clock. But the alarm running on top of it is something you can calm.
And the National Institutes of Health lists sleep loss as a known trigger. The legs wreck your sleep. The wrecked sleep makes the legs worse tomorrow night.
Round and round, every single night.
Why the Pills Work... Until They Don't
If you've been on ropinirole or pramipexole, you may know this already.
They can work brilliantly at first. Then you need more. Then it starts earlier in the day.
Doctors call it augmentation. Johns Hopkins researchers found it hits around 7 to 8% of patients every year. In one Mayo Clinic group followed for about 8 years, 42% had it.
In 2024, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine changed its guidelines and now advises against these drugs as a routine treatment.
(If you're on one, don't stop or change it without talking to your doctor.)
"So the real question isn't how do I fix my legs," Frazer says. "It's how do I get my nervous system to actually switch off at night."
Every Fix in Your Drawer Made the Same Mistake
-
A bar of soap under the sheet
-
Magnesium sprays, pills and lotions
-
Tonic water before bed
-
Compression socks and leg massagers
-
A vibrating pad costing hundreds of dollars
Every one of them was aimed at your legs.
None of them touched the alarm.
That's why so many work for a few nights, then stop.
And while you were trying them…
Restless legs made your life smaller.
The movie you can't sit through…
The flight you turned down…
The husband who sleeps on the couch now, so at least one of you gets some rest.
And when you try to explain it, people laugh. Even doctors.
But it turns out, there's been a simple solution all along…
What Humans Did for Millions of Years That We Stopped Doing
For millions of years, humans slept on the ground.
Then came rubber-soled shoes, carpet, and beds raised off the floor.
Cut off from the earth, your body carries a measurable electrical charge.
It's called Electron Deficiency Syndrome.
And a body carrying that charge has a much harder time standing the alarm down.
Researchers have shown that charge drops the instant your body makes contact with the earth.
In 2004, Maurice Ghaly and Dale Teplitz had people sleep grounded for 8 weeks and measured their cortisol overnight.
Their cortisol patterns shifted back toward normal, and they slept better.
Remember June's multimeter? 2.5 standing next to her bed. 0.5 the moment she lay on the cover.
Grounding has been studied for exactly the two things restless legs is tied to.
Sleep, and a nervous system that won't switch off.
You're in Bed 8 Hours a Night Anyway
Grounding happens while you're asleep.
The cover goes under your fitted sheet and plugs into the ground port of a wall outlet.
After that you get into bed the same way you always have, and you're grounded for the exact hours the alarm is loudest.
But not every grounding product actually works...
The Hidden Flaw That Kills Most Grounding Sheets in Months
Most grounding sheets use silver thread. Silver oxidizes. Air, moisture, sweat and every wash strip more of it away.
"People think grounding stopped working, or that they got scammed,"
Frazer says.
"Really, their sheet just died but nobody tells them."
That's what happened to Karen's first sheet, a cheaper one she tried before Down To Ground. "I don't know what the fuss is about this, 'cause it's not doing anything."
Why Frazer Ditched Silver for Carbon
Before Down To Ground, Frazer raced bikes professionally. Serious race bikes are made from carbon fiber because it's light, strong, and doesn't corrode the way metal does.
So when he saw silver sheets dying after a few washes, he already knew which material wouldn't.
He wove carbon right through the cover itself.
-
Can't oxidize. It's already in its most stable form
-
Nothing to wash out
-
So thin you can't feel it through your sheet
Introducing the Down To Ground Mattress Cover
-
Carbon-infused fibers
-
Goes under your fitted sheet, so it never touches your skin
-
Never needs washing. Just a wipe every few months
-
Half size grounds only your side of the bed
-
15-foot cord reaches any outlet
-
FREE outlet tester in the box, so you can check it's working yourself
It connects to the same ground port that protects your home's wiring. No electricity runs through it.
Production Update: Every cover is hand-tested 3 times for conductivity before it ships. Frazer refuses to skip a single test, which caps how many can go out each month.
Then Her Husband Stopped Calling It Woo-Woo
Sarah sits at a desk all day for work. "I've always struggled with restless legs and restless sleep."
Her husband is a complete skeptic. "He thinks I'm all woo-woo."
Then the leg twitching before sleep started easing off. "Is this me just wanting this to happen, or is it actually happening?"
Now her husband has seen the difference too.
Adam from Banbury, England, says the same. He went from 2 to 3 hours a night, waking every half hour, to 6 hours straight.
"I feel like it instantly stops restless leg syndrome the second I lay down."
Over 100,000 customers now sleep grounded with Down To Ground.
What Every Bad Night Is Really Costing You
While you decide, the alarm keeps running.
Every night without proper rest:
-
The alarm gets louder
-
The sleep debt gets deeper
-
Another evening planned around your legs
Imagine lying still through a whole movie...
Falling asleep next to your husband instead of listening to him leave for the couch...
Waking up and realizing you never got up once...
How would that change your life?
Will It Stop Working After a Few Nights Like Everything Else?
Everything else worked for a few nights, then turned on you. But those fixes were aimed at your legs.
This gives your nervous system 8 hours a night to stand down, alongside whatever your doctor has you on.
And Frazer built the cover to keep conducting for YEARS, not months.
June's restless legs started easing in the first week and kept improving. Asked if she still gets them: "Now not at all."
Stay grounded, and the alarm stays off.
Wait, Is It Safe to Plug Into the Wall?
It uses no electricity. It's as safe as standing barefoot on grass, from your own bed. It can't shock you, and the tester lets you confirm your outlet is properly grounded before you sleep on it.
"I did that, and I haven't looked back." Sarah
Night 1, Week 1, Week 4: What People Notice
Night 1: For a lot of customers, sleep changes first. Falling asleep easier. Staying asleep longer. Fewer trips to the bathroom. June noticed it "almost immediately."
Week 1: Jackie wasn't expecting much. "I'm not one that believes in quick fixes, so I was quite prepared to wait." About a week in, her watch showed deeper sleep.
Week 4: Her knee pain had totally gone. And the legs that were forever twitching? "I don't get it anymore."
"For once I actually feel confident that I've found something that really works."
What 100,000+ Customers Are Saying
"Two days after starting to use this underlay, my restless legs calmed down and my husband and I both felt that we were sleeping noticeably deeper. These effects have continued."
"As someone with restless leg syndrome, this underlay has been a game-changer. I'm finally getting uninterrupted sleep."
"I'm so surprised how well this has worked. I've suffered with restless legs. I also have varicose veins which are very painful and I can't believe how much the veins have calmed down."
"The swelling has really gone down and no more tingling and restless legs. I also feel a calmness over me."
The Down To Ground "Grounding Guarantee"
You've tried everything. You've spent a fortune. You've almost given up.
What if this is different?
Every cover comes with the Grounding Guarantee. It will ground you properly, just like standing barefoot on grass. If it ever stops conducting, it's replaced.

Down To Ground
Hi Linda, most sheets use silver thread, which oxidizes and washes out. Ours uses carbon woven through the cover and never needs washing, so it keeps conducting. You can check it yourself with the tester in the box.

Hi Ron, no. The cover doesn't replace anything, she just sleeps on it. Any changes to her medication should always go through her doctor.
