The socket tester checks that your wall outlet is grounded before you connect your grounding product.
How to test
- Turn the outlet switch on.
- Plug the tester directly into the outlet (no adapter needed).
- Wait for the lights, then compare them with the legend printed on your tester.
Two green lights or two amber lights with white tester means the outlet is grounded. Any other combination (a red light, only one light, or no lights) means the outlet may not be grounded. Try a different outlet, and if none pass, send us a photo of the tester plugged in.
Testers vary: some are green and some are white. Always go by the legend on your own tester.
The tester tripped my power
The green tester has a small RCD test button. Pressing it deliberately trips your home's safety switch and cuts the power. It isn't needed for grounding, so don't press it. Reset your safety switch and test again without pressing the button.
Does the switch need to stay on?
Only while you're testing. Our products connect through the outlet's ground pin, not the power, so they work with the switch on or off. You can also leave the tester plugged in.
US outlets
In the US, the grounding cord plugs straight into the bottom (ground) hole of the outlet once the tester confirms it's grounded. Watch the demo.
Power boards and extension cords
These work too, as long as the socket tester shows the power board itself is grounded.
